Coefficient and Bays Consulting are experts in machine learning and mathematical modelling who have contributed heavily to horizon scanning, technical review and proof of concepts in the Home Office and wider public sector. Backed by Innovate UK, and the Department for Science and Technology, this team are exploring the use of AI-assisted technologies in hiring and the way these tools may be susceptible to hidden biases. This 6-month project from May - October 2024 will be taking a social-technical approach to the ‘black box’ nature of these systems delivering

  • A report of an extensive market evaluation of AI-supported CV screening tools in Applicant Tracking Systems, evaluating their capabilities, bias-mitigation features, and compliance with UK data protection and equality legislation.

  • An open-source toolkit for developers detecting and mitigating both human and AI-driven biases in hiring.

  • An outreach and knowledge transfer programme to maximise the project’s overall impact.

  • Development of Technical service and AI safety accreditation for company executives.
